Context
Nationale Nederlanden’s Non-Life branch operates in a fast-moving insurance market with diverse data workloads — from modern LLM and dynamic pricing initiatives to legacy reporting systems. As data monetization became a strategic priority, the organization needed a unified platform (SIDAP) to bring data engineering, analytics, and AI capabilities together under proper governance.
Intervention
As Solution Architect for SIDAP and SIDIAP, I was technically responsible for an Azure-Databricks-based platform as well as an AWS-Kubernetes-based platform serving the entire Dutch Non-Life business. In practice, this meant steering technical direction across multiple teams, addressing cross-cutting problems that fell between team boundaries, and providing architectural guardrails for long-term design decisions. A large part of the role consisted of bringing technical information together to advise management and define future platform direction.
Within the department, it was regarded as a key position — a highly horizontal role that required traversing the organizational hierarchy in all directions.
Business Impact
- Steered the technical direction of a platform
- Bridged the gap between fast-moving data engineering teams and management decision-making
- Addressed cross-team architectural problems that would otherwise create delivery bottlenecks
